First edition and first print run of this work lavishly illustrated with metal engravings based on Thomas Allom's on-the-spot drawings: 2 title-frontispices, 2 maps, one of which on a double page, and 93 out-of-text plates printed on strong paper: palace interiors, mosques, monuments, Muslim scenes, street scenes, cemeteries, views of Constantinople's surroundings...
