One volume in-16, full red morocco, ornate smooth spine, triple gilt fillet framing the boards, all edges gilt. VIII, 179 pp. Corners worn. First edition of the first French constitution, which remained in force until August 10, 1792. It is preceded by the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, and ends with the engraved signatures of those who ratified the constitution (including the King). The table of contents occupies the last 50 pages. This Constitution abolishes the notion of divine right, which gave the king absolute power over France; he now bears the title of "King of the French".
