BAUDELAIRE (Charles). Les Paradis artificiels. Opium and Has - Lot 78
BAUDELAIRE (Charles). Les Paradis artificiels. Opium and Hashish. Paris, Poulet-Malassis et De Broise, 1860. One volume. 11 by 17.7 cm. (4)-IV-304-(1) pages. Red streaked half-chagrin, spine with 4 raised bands, period binding. Rubbing on spine, perfect condition inside. First edition, printed in an edition of 1,500 copies. A first-issue copy, dated 1860, part of the original edition appeared a year later, reissued in 1861. In this seminal essay, Baudelaire addresses the relationship between drugs and poetic creation, offering in the first part, entitled Le Poème du haschisch, an account of his experiences at the Club des Hashischins. The Club des Hashichins was a group dedicated to the study and experimentation of drugs (mainly hashish), founded in Paris by Doctor Jacques Joseph Moreau de Tours in 1844 and active until 1849. The second part, Un mangeur d'opium, is a commentary mixed with translated passages from Thomas de Quincey's famous Confessions of an English Opium Eater, published in 1821.
