Copy of the first illustrated edition, containing the 4 plates removed by the censor according to Vicaire. Photograph of Victor HUGO by Pierre PETIT, taken in 1861. Vintage print. With Victor Hugo's handwritten signature. "Very first photograph of bearded Victor Hugo. It was in January 1861, following a violent sore throat, that the writer decided to grow a beard: "I let my beard grow to see if it would protect me against sore throats". There are several references to the famous beard in Victor Hugo's correspondence: Conclusion: a man's head must be beautiful, well shaped by intelligence and well illuminated by thought, to be beautiful without a beard; a human face must be ugly, irreparably deformed and degraded by the narrow ideas of vulgar life, to be ugly with a beard. So let your beards grow, all you ugly people who would like to be beautiful" (letter to an unknown addressee, 1845). In addition to the aesthetic aspect of this metamorphosis, it was a veritable thumbing of the nose at the imperial authorities, who had decreed a ban on beards in the teaching profession. (Le Feu Follet)" A rare copy, made unique by its enrichments.
