[LE NOBLE (Eustache)]: The Spirit of Gerson. S.l., s.n., 169 - Lot 146
[LE NOBLE (Eustache)]: The Spirit of Gerson. S.l., s.n., 1691. One volume. 9 by 15.5 cm. (2)-249 pages. Contemporary full calf, 5-rib spine, ornate boards. Binding in very good condition. Two small old ownership stamps on title page, otherwise very good condition inside. First edition of this text, later reissued under the title Le Bouclier de la France. Eustache Le Noble (1643-1711) was an adventurous French writer. Leading a dissolute life, the bankrupt Le Noble was forced to sell his office to pay off his debts. He fabricated false claims against the heirs of Troyes criminal lieutenant Giraudin. Convicted of forgery, he was sentenced to the Conciergerie, where he fell in love with Gabrielle Perreau, the Belle Épicière, who was detained there. Having found a way to escape with her, he published satirical dialogues on current affairs. His first attempt was successful, and he made a career of it. From the outset, Le Noble was anti-ultramontane, anti-orangist and anti-Protestant, in favor of the sovereign's legitimacy and Louis XIV's diplomatic and military policies. L'Esprit de Gerson develops the differences between the King and the Pope.
