[Photography] [Photoglyptie] DEVRIES (Maurice): A Century of - Lot 195
[Photography] [Photoglyptie] DEVRIES (Maurice): A Century of French Glory. Paris, éditions M.D. (maurice Devriès) 1950. One volume. The work consists of 12 Italian-style albums (28 by 20 cm) (complete), each with 12 pages (144 pages in all), featuring one to four laminated photographs (photographs or photoglypics). Each album has an embossed cover, a central photograph and is bound with a garnet-red cord. In a cut-out, slipcase. Under each photo, a note introduces the character, and also why he was chosen by the author, often with humor. Very good condition... Begun in 1845 by Pierre-Marie Lizerolles, collector, bibliophile, writer and modest comptroller of finances in the service of the King, who compiled the first album intended to bring together "a panorama of portraits of the highest personalities of the State, Sciences, Arts, Letters, Theater and other fields", it was continued by Maurice DEVIES, under various pseudonyms, whose truth he reveals at the very end of the last album. The collection ended in 1950. Most copies end with a photo of Vincent AURIOL fishing in 1947. Ours adds a photo of "Commodore" Charles DROUILLY, a picturesque character of Parisian nights, who inherits one of the most detailed entries. A highly engaging collection, with deathbed photos of HUGO and PROUST, a surprising photo of GAUGUIN, one of HANSI, de MAUPASSANT, Cécile SOREL, Pierre and Marie CURIE on bicycles, Louise MICHEL, POULBOT training his dog, and even the Eiffel Tower still reduced to two stories...
