[Revolution] Lot of 5 revolutionary pamphlets relating to th - Lot 203
[Revolution] Lot of 5 revolutionary pamphlets relating to the fundamental debate on the King's right of veto all bound in modern bradel boards, substantially 19 by 12.5 cm (except Necker: 19.5 by 24.5 cm). Perfect condition: This debate is at the origin of the right/left divide that still punctuates French political life today. The 5 brochures are in first edition, and are rare. 1. LACHEZE-MUREL (Pierre-Joseph). Opinion sur la sanction royale. Versailles, Ph.-D. Pierres, s.d. [1789]. 8 pages. Small light stains in margins. First edition. Unknown to Conlon and Martin and Walter; no copy in CCFr.; Worldcat locates 2 copies (Newberry Chicago and British Library). By a deputy of the Tiers-État from the sénéchaussée of Quercy to the Estates-General. The veto is to be "suspensive in some cases, indefinite in others." 2. Observations on the royal sanction, addressed to M. le Chevalier de Pange. By M. l'Abbé B***. Paris, 1789. 23 pages. Paper slightly foxed. First edition. Conlon 89: 4378 locates only one copy in France. Hostile to all vetoes. 3. Observations on the King's veto, or royal sanction. [Paris], Garnery, & Volland, s.d. [1789]. 15 pages. First edition. Conlon 89: 4398 locates only one copy in France (B.M. du Havre); the CCFr. lists a second (Assemblée nationale). Against all vetoes. "Sovereignty resides in the nation and, by induction, in the Assembly of Deputies which represents it." (P. 3). 4. Du Partage de la puissance législative. S.l.n.d. [1789]. (2)-46 pages First edition. Conlon 89: 2125 locates only one copy in France (B.N.F.). The anonymous author, after outlining the many advantages of bicameralism, declares himself in favor of a suspensive veto. The King "should not have an absolute veto, but he should enjoy the same right as the Senate, that of opposing the execution of a law for a certain period of time". (P. 29). 5. NECKER (Jacques). Letter to M. le Président de l'Assemblée Nationale. [From September 11, 1789]. Paris, Imprimerie Royale, 1789. 16 pages. Minor stains on last page. Pp. 2 to 12: Rapport fait au Roi dans son Conseil, par le Premier Ministre des Finances. First edition. Conlon 89: 10219; Martin and Walter 25724. "Necker's case is different. Sure of the failure of the absolute veto, he thought it clever to rally behind the suspensive veto; but in reality, there was no more convinced supporter of the need for strong power." (Henri Grange, Le débat sur le veto à l'Assemblée constituante, in Société française d'étude du XVIIIe siècle, p. 121).
