[Royal gift copy—Louis XVI] DUGUAY-TROUIN (René). *Recueil d - Lot 26
[Royal gift copy—Louis XVI] DUGUAY-TROUIN (René). *Recueil des combats de Duguay-Trouin*. Paris: Sieur Le Gouaz, n.d. (ca. 1774). A large folio volume, in marbled sheepskin, bearing on the front cover, stamped in gold lettering, the inscription: “Presented by the King to Mr. Le Marié d’Aubigny”; the spine is plain and richly decorated. Scuffing and wear; slight water stain along the lower margin of 3 text leaves. A fully engraved first edition devoted to the naval campaigns of René Duguay-Trouin (1673–1736), conceived, according to the preface, to make the Memoirs of the famous privateer “more useful to young sailors.” The illustrations include an engraved half-title page, a portrait of Duguay-Trouin, an engraved frontispiece, and 15 numbered plates, including a double-page general map showing the locations of battles and encounters with the enemy, 9 sheets featuring 18 scenes of naval battles, and the large, double-page plate depicting the capture of Rio de Janeiro in 1711. This is followed by 12 pages of text, entirely engraved, adorned with a header and 3 technical illustrations, and 2 pages of “Explanation of the Naval Terms in This Book.” The illustrations were drawn by Nicolas-Marie Ozanne (1728–1811) and engraved between 1770 and 1773 by his sister Jeanne-Françoise Ozanne and his brother-in-law Yves-Marie Le Gouaz; the maps were engraved by Drouet. A PRECIOUS COPY PRESENTED BY THE KING, specially bound for the Marié d’Aubigny, bearing on the front cover the gilded inscription: “GIVEN BY THE KING TO MR. LE MARIÉ D’AUBIGNY.” An old handwritten inscription on the endpaper reads: “This book was given in 1792 by His Majesty Louis XVI to Mr. Jean Baptiste Jérôme Le Marié d’Aubigny, Attorney General of the Paris Chamber of Accounts.”
