[French Revolution] [FREY (Lucius Junius)] The Political Adv - Lot 33
[French Revolution] [FREY (Lucius Junius)] The Political Adventures of Father Nicaise, or The Anti-Federalist. Paris: Les Marchands de Nouveautés, 1793. A 16mo pamphlet, 19th-century half-basane binding, smooth spine with decorative embellishments. 72 pp. Paper soiled. First edition of this rare revolutionary pamphlet in which the author defends the unity and indivisibility of the Republic and opposes “federalism,” an accusation then leveled against the Girondins and their supporters in the departments. Lucius Junius Frey, born Moses Dobruška, a singular figure of Moravian origin who converted to revolutionary ideas, was close to François Chabot. Implicated in the Compagnie des Indes affair and associated with the “foreigners” persecuted alongside the Dantonists, he was guillotined in Paris in April 1794. Includes: The Whims of an Aristocrat, a new almanac for the year 1792. With a booklet detailing the exact locations of post stations and the distances for travel by stagecoach to and from Paris, the border towns, as well as the other major cities of the Kingdom. Paris, Francion, n.d. [1792]. One volume, in-16 format, 19th-century brown half-calf, smooth spine with decorative embellishments. XXXVI, 108 pp. Stains, creases. A satirical and counterrevolutionary almanac containing a frontispiece depicting figures busy removing the coats of arms and emblems of the Ancien Régime from a building’s facade. The work concludes with a parody of an approval issued “in the third year of the Era of Liberty,” signed “Cochon and Associates, ragpickers of Propaganda.”
