[GUEVARA (Antonio de)]. *Libro Aureo*, on the Life and Lette - Lot 36
[GUEVARA (Antonio de)]. *Libro Aureo*, on the Life and Letters of Marcus Aurelius, Emperor and Most Eloquent Orator. Antwerp, Juan Steelsio, 1550. A 12mo volume in a 19th-century full stiff vellum binding with a morocco title label. (18) ff. 542 pp., (5) ff. Binding soiled; water stains on the title page with a small loss in the upper margin that does not affect the text; paper slightly browned; faint water stains on the last two blank folios; endpaper of the second cover missing. An Antwerp edition of one of the great literary successes of the Spanish Renaissance. A Franciscan friar, preacher, and chronicler to Charles V, Antonio de Guevara (c. 1480–1545) first published his *Libro aureo de Marco Aurelio* in 1528. Presented as the life and correspondence of the philosopher-emperor Marcus Aurelius, the text is in fact a literary construct in which Guevara blends classical culture, fiction, moral maxims, and reflections on the governance of men.
