[THE TRIAL OF LOUIS XVI] [Manuscript]. Roll calls from the T - Lot 67
[THE TRIAL OF LOUIS XVI] [Manuscript]. Roll calls from the Trial of Louis XVI. One in-4 volume, in period full calf, ribbed spine with title: Procés de Louis XVI - Vol. V. Top cap damaged, some leather wear. An important contemporary manuscript—or one dating from close to the time of the events—devoted to the roll calls and votes of the deputies of the Convention during the trial of Louis XVI. Written in perfectly legible black ink on bluish, fully ruled paper, the volume compiles, in the form of lists, tables, and transcriptions, the details of the votes and opinions expressed by the members of the Convention during the decisive sessions of January 15–20, 1793. It includes: 1/ An alphabetical list of the deputies to the National Convention who, during the roll calls, voted in favor of the condemnation of Louis XVI. 16 pp. 2/ Comparative list of the four roll calls held during the sessions of January 15, 16, 17, 18, and 19, 1793, regarding the trial of Louis XVI, and the opinions of the deputies to the National Convention during each of those sessions. (1) f., 36 pp. 3/ Results of the first [-fourth] roll call. (2) ff. 4/ [First Roll Call] Opinions of various Deputies during the first roll call on the question: Is Louis guilty of conspiracy against the liberty of the nation and of an attack on the general security of the State? Pp. 1–13, (1) blank folio. 5/ Second roll call on the question: Should the matter be put to a popular vote, or not? Pp. 15–56. 6/ Third roll call of January 16 and 17, 1793, on the question: What sentence shall be imposed on Louis? pp. 57–233. 7/ Fourth Appeal. Individual opinions on the question of the proposed stay of execution of the judgment against Louis XVI. 30 pp. At the end of the volume, two printed documents have been bound: 1/ Decree of the National Convention No. 250 of January 15, 17, 19, and 20, 1793, concerning Louis Capet, the last King of the French. Paris, National Executive Printing Office of the Louvre, 1793. 4 pp. 2/ Proclamation of the Provisional Executive Council of January 20, 1793. Paris, National Executive Printing Office of the Louvre, 1793. 2 pp. Text setting forth the practical arrangements for the execution of Louis XVI scheduled for the following day, January 21, at the Place de la Révolution: departure from the Temple at eight o’clock and arrangements made for the execution. The fact that the manuscript and the two official texts printed immediately after the votes are bound together in a contemporary binding suggests that this collection was compiled at the time of the events or very shortly thereafter. A valuable document on the trial of Louis XVI and the votes of the Convention members, of exceptional scope, preserved in its contemporary binding and accompanied by two of the official texts that concluded the trial and ordered the king’s execution.
