[CORMATIN (Pierre Dezoteux, known as Baron de)]. Journey of the Former Duke of Châtelet to Portugal, containing interesting details about its colonies, the Lisbon earthquake, Mr. Pombal, and the court; revised, corrected against the manuscript, and expanded with notes on the current situation of that kingdom and its colonies, by J.Fr. Bourgoing [...]. Paris, Arthus-Bertrand, 1808. 2 volumes in-8, full sheepskin, smooth spine with decoration. (2) ff., VIII, 268 pp.; (2) ff., 260 pp., 32 pp. of publisher’s catalog. One cap page missing, small wormhole, wear at one corner, small wormhole on the first two ff. of vol. II. A large fold-out map of Portugal and a fold-out view of Lisbon Bay as the frontispiece of vol. I. New edition of this important travel account of Portugal, first published in 1798 under the name of Louis-Marie-Florent du Châtelet, but attributed to Pierre-Marie-Félicité Dezoteux, Baron de Cormatin (1753–1812). The text was revised and expanded by the diplomat and traveler Jean-François de Bourgoing, who added numerous notes intended to update the information on Portugal and its colonial empire, particularly Brazil. Barbier, IV, 1089: “The true author of this book is Desotteut, an officer on the general staff of Rochambeau’s army, better known as Cormartin; the Duke of Châtelet never set foot in Portugal.”
