A symbol of French industrial genius and a true automotive myth, the Citroën DS had the difficult task of succeeding the Traction Avant. It appeared in 1955 and was striking for its modernism at all levels. On the one hand, its line, which is due to the Italian designer and sculptor Flaminio Bertoni, in collaboration with engineers linked to aeronautics and hydraulics, is completely new. On the other hand, its conception as well as its technique are revolutionary. The DS is indeed the bearer of many innovations that set it apart from the rest of the car production of the time, at least in Europe. In addition to its legendary hydropneumatic suspension, which will remain unique to the brand almost until today, it offers a completely new equipment: power steering, front disc brakes, and semi-automatic gearbox with hydraulic control to name but a few examples. Other new features such as swivel headlights in 1967 and electronic fuel injection in 1969 followed in the course of its development. During its career of about twenty years, the variations of the DS are numerous, from a body point of view, going from the elegant convertible to the iconic sedan, passing by the utility station wagon, without forgetting as regards the various versions, the famous "Pallas" finish from 1965. The DS is a gifted car that can do everything and even shines in competition, winning the Monte Carlo Rally in 1958. Unquestionably a car of the 20th century, the DS has marked its time, as much by its beauty as its technological advance, so much so that it is today one of the most collected cars in the world. The Citroën DS of our vacation is a 21 with hydraulic gearbox in Pallas finish, of the best 1966 vintage according to the specialists, in its desirable and characteristic "Palladium grey" color (AC108). Ordered by its first owner on October 21, 1965, from the SMA dealer in Amilly, Loiret, and delivered a few months later, it was put on the road on March 2, 1966. The car followed this initial owner in his various moves and was used daily by him until 1978, before being stored, as can be seen in the history file that still accompanies it today. It was then directly acquired by the current owner in 2004. It is then to be restarted and the restarting is carried out in 2005. On this occasion many expenses are engaged, but the work is never completely finished. Finally, the car is stopped again about ten years ago and left in its corner outside since, mainly for lack of time. So much so that it is now completely in need of restoration. Important point: the engine is not blocked and seems willing to start again. The bodywork is globally sound, except for the front fenders, and the adjustments are good. Obviously, due to the storage conditions, the paint and the chrome are gone. The file of this DS, which testifies to its clear history, is very complete, as it includes not only the purchase invoice and the notice of release of the vehicle, but also numerous invoices and documents, in addition to the original operating manual. This sleeping DS 21, because of all its characteristics, is therefore a particularly interesting restoration project for any fan of the model.
