GAUTIER D'AGOTY, Arnauld Eloi (1741 - 1780). Perspective vie - Lot 53
GAUTIER D'AGOTY, Arnauld Eloi (1741 - 1780). Perspective view of the southern extension of the city of Lyon. 1776. Copper engraving after Lallemand's drawing (43 x 108 cm). Wooden frame and post gilded stucco. Engraving cut at the edge of the composition, missing caption replaced by an old handwritten caption, restorations in the view, traces of humidity. A very rare view of Lyon, known as the Vue de PERRACHE. Around 1766, Lyon engineer Antoine-Michel Perrache (1726 - 1779) took up Guillaume-Marie Delorme's project to enlarge the city of Lyon to the south, by moving the confluence of the Rhône and Saône rivers back more than 2 kilometers. His plan was approved by the Consulate on January 9, 1770, and the following year by letters patent followed by a favorable opinion from the King's Council of State; the Compagnie Perrache, an independent company, was created for this purpose in 1771. In 1772, as his work progressed, he asked that a statue of the king be erected in the district he was transforming. A new plan, presented in 1774, was the subject of a deliberation by the Consulate on November 20, which authorized Perrache to demolish the Ainay rampart, despite the criticism his undertaking provoked. It was on the occasion of this major project that Perrache published this engraving in 1776. Audin et Vial, Dictionnaire des artistes lyonnais, 1919.
